2017 Honda Odyssey vs. 2017 Toyota Sienna
Looking for a new minivan for your family? The 2017 Honda Odyssey and the 2017 Toyota Sienna are two well-known options. They’re safe, roomy, and designed for busy households. So, which is the better value? How should you decide which one to choose to take you around Kelowna, West Kelowna, and Vernon? Let’s take a look at the base models of each and see how they compare:
The main concern for most families is a vehicle’s ability to keep you safe, and both of these minivans are well-equipped with many safety capabilities. The Sienna comes standard with the Star Safety System™, which is the integration of Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Brake Assist, and Anti-lock Brake System, which work in tandem instead of independently of each other. Some of the models offer the option of a Blind-Spot Monitor System with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. The new Honda Odyssey also has standard Vehicle Stability Assist with Traction Control, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Brake Assist, and Anti-lock Brakes. However, it also offers Honda LaneWatch Blind Spot Display, Forward Collision Warning System, and Lane Departure Warning System as available options, comprising a more comprehensive suite of offerings than what’s available on the Sienna. The 2017 Odyssey has also won many industry safety designations, including the IIHS Top Safety Pick and a Five-Star Rating from the NHTSA.
Space and Comfort
The Honda Odyssey and the Toyota Sienna seat up to eight passengers and offer ample space for people and cargo. They are almost exactly the same size, but the Odyssey is slightly longer and wider. As a result, it offers significantly more leg space with 1040 litres of legroom in the front and 1038 litres of legroom in the rear, compared to the Sienna’s 1029 litres and 955 litres, respectively. The Odyssey has a standard eight-way power adjusting driver’s seat and One-Motion 60/40 Split Third Row Magic Seat®, which allows for tall cargo to be squeezed in. You can accomplish some of those feats with the Sienna, but you need to move up a trim level for power adjusting driver’s seats. It’s also important to note that the Split & Stow™ Third Row seats are great for folding down flat, but they do not provide space for storing tall items.
The Odyssey comes out ahead when it comes to fuel economy. Its Government of Canada’s estimated (based on 2017 estimates, actual mileage will vary) 12.3 city and 8.5 highway L/100 km beats the Sienna’s 12.5 city and 8.9 highway L/100 km. Combine that performance with the Odyssey’s slightly larger fuel tank (79.5 litres versus 75 litres), and you’ll be able to stretch out those trips to the gas station with a Honda Odyssey.
You’re probably planning to keep your minivan for a long time, so it’s key to look at warranty coverage. Both the Odyssey and the Sienna have comparable basic and powertrain warranties (3 years/36,000 miles and 5 years/60,000 miles), but Honda’s Roadside Assistance Plan comes out ahead. It provides an extra year of coverage—3 years/36,000 miles compared to Toyota’s 2 years/25,000 miles. That’s definitely a deal-sweetener!
