What You Will Need

You will need the following items to restore your headlights:

  • 1,000, 800, and 2,000 grit sand paper

  • A rag or microfiber cloth (preferably)

  • Shop towels

  • Rubbing compound

  • Vehicle masking tape

  • Drill

  • Rubbing Alcohol

  • Spray bottle filled with water

  • Measuring cup that you don’t use for food

  • Car wash soap

  • Water

  • Glass cleaner

  • Urethane and mineral spirits

  • First, remove the first layer of muck from the headlights with simple car wash soap and water. Dry, then follow up with a household glass cleaner.

  • Now you want to tape off the headlights by placing tape on the body panels to protect the paint. Make sure to mask off a hefty layer.

  • Cut your sandpaper into four sections, and first use the 800 grit. Get the paper wet by spraying it, stick it to the headlight, then continue to spray the headlight until its completely wet.

  • Slowly sand in one direction and keep the paper wet to make it last longer. Get all the corners and dispose of the paper when finished. You can wipe the headlight as necessary, and you can stop when you see the 800 grit marks.

  • Follow the 800 grit steps for the 1000 grit paper and the 2000 grit paper.

  • Put the compound paste on the headlight, and then attach the compound pad to your drill. Start drilling slowly, and then work your speed up. Feel free to use as much compound paste as needed.

  • With a cloth and rubbing alcohol, clean the headlights to remove compound residue.

  • Mix .5 ounces of urethane to .5 ounces of mineral spirits to create a clear coat, if you want to seal the headlights. Just make sure to wash your car beforehand, and then spray the coat evenly. If it becomes too thick, use the mineral spirits on a cloth towel and remove it to start over.
